Saturday Snapshot 7/16: Shenandoah National Park, Part 1

Saturday Snapshot is hosted by West Metro Mommy Reads.

Last week, with our sons away, my husband and I enjoyed several very relaxing days at Shenandoah National Park, camping, hiking...and lots of reading! Here are some highlights from the first 2 days and our hike on Stony Man Trail, leading to some magnificent views:

Enjoying the campfire at our campsite at Lewis Mountain

"Two roads diverged in a wood..."

Mountaintop Selfie with Amazing Views!

View to the south from Stony Man

View to the north - see Skyline Drive?

Clouds and mountains

Relaxing by the fire with a great book!

More photos from the trip next week!

Hope you are enjoying a lovely weekend.

  1. This looks like a beautiful campground. I've never been to Virginia, but I'd love to visit.

    1. Shenandoah National Park is a beautiful place, Sandra - filled with a huge variety: waterfalls, mountains, forests. It's one of our favorite NPs!

  2. Your photos make me nostalgic. I haven't been camping in years. I have been trying to talk my kids and grandkids into going. They think it's too hot to go now, but they better look out when it cools down some.

    1. It IS too hot now for camping, Vicki - I agree! But up on top of that mountain, it was cool and comfortable! 90's and humid down in the valley, but 70's, dry, and perfect up on top! We'll wait until Sept to go again when the weather is cooler.

    1. Yes, having lots of reading time while camping is a new experience - our sons are 18 & 21 so we've just begun camping on our own - very different!

    1. We love National Parks, Margot, & have visited them all over the country...but Shenandoah is the only one within easy driving distance of home, so we've visited a lot! Still discovering new trails & views on every trip, though! Hope you get out to a NP, too!

  6. What a fabulous trip...and it looks like you had great weather for it. How long was the hike up to the summit to those wonderful views?

    1. I'm very limited hike-wise, Melinda, because of my chronic illness. Its primary characteristic is an intolerance to exertion - basically, exercise makes me much sicker. Lots of meds & very careful, gradual exercise have built up my stamina so that I can walk or hike now! Yay! Generally, 1 mile is my limit, and I wear a heart rate monitor & stop to rest when I need to. So - long answer, sorry! - this particuar hike was 1.4 miles which was a personal best for me since getting sick - plus gorgeous views! Long way from the multi-day backpacking we used to do, but I am thrilled to be outdoors hiking! There are lots of hikes at Shenandoah that are shorter - great for kids!!
