Today’s Monday post comes to you from the road! This morning we said goodbye to our son (who’s watching the house for us) and finally set out on the trip we’ve been planning for six months! Our ultimate destination is Glacier National Park in Montana and Banff and Yoho National Parks in Canada, but it’ll take us a while to get there. We have lots of fun stops planned along the way and on the way back, including state parks, more national parks, and a few visits with family and friends. Today, we’re driving from Delaware to West Virginia and spending two nights in Coopers Rock State Forest.
I’m looking forward to extra reading time while relaxing!
I’m loving The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy for Big Book Summer. It’s just as good as everyone told me: in-depth characters, completely engrossing, and incredible writing. Family drama? Whew, this is one seriously dysfunctional family! It digs deep into some difficult, dark topics but with a thread of humor and gorgeous writing.
Yes, I’m STILL listening to The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky! I was hoping to finish it before the trip, but I’m up to about 80%. The second half has been more engaging and suspenseful, with one of the brothers falsely accused of murder (and all the evidence against him), but it’s taken another philosophical detour!
My husband and I haven’t chosen our first road trip audio book yet, but as I was typing this on my phone, I got a notification that one of my Libby requests came in, so I guess we’ll start with that one! It’s Walk the Wire by David Baldacci. Neither of us reads much Baldacci normally, but this one is set in Montana! (I collected a bunch of Montana-set thrillers on audio for this trip.) It’s also a Big Book!
My husband is also reading a Big Book. He just started Streets of Laredo by Larry McMurtry, which I recently finished.
What are you and your family reading this week?
Happy travels. Happy you are enjoying Pat Conroy's book, sometime read his biography of him by his last wife, Cassandra King Conroy. Very good. "Tell Me a Story: My life with Pat Conroy"
ReplyDeleteThat sounds great! Thanks for the recommendation, Kathryn!
DeleteSafe travels. Sounds like an awesome road trip. Love national and state parks. If you're still looking for Montana reads, you might try Ivan Doig, if you haven't already read him.
ReplyDeleteThanks! We love national and state parks, too ❤️ Thanks for the recommendation!
DeleteAfter your video review, I want to read Streets of Laredo. I just doubt I'll get to it this summer as I already have a back log of books I've committed to reading. // I hope you have a fabulous trip. May I recommend A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT to read as you are driving around Montana. It is novella in length (100ish pages) and the narrator is very good. I was able to get the audiobook from my library easily with no notice because it has been around for so long. The copy I got was in a collection of short stories. I didn't listen to the other stories. Probably should have since I enjoyed the first one so much. //Cheers!
ReplyDeleteSame here, Anne - too many great Big Books and too little time!
DeleteI am so far behind on visiting blogs! I hope the first week of your road trip has gone well, that you are enjoying your books, and that you are seeing wonderful things! I look forward to seeing photos and hearing stories.
