Saturday Snapshot 2/6: Big Birds

Saturday Snapshot is hosted by West Metro Mommy Reads.

I have an odd collection of photos this week. After that big snow storm hit us a couple of weeks ago, we spotted a bunch of HUGE birds hanging around our house. The first photo is of a big hawk who hung around our backyard for a few days.

The next few are of a group of turkey vultures. I went out to my mailbox one day and saw 8 huge turkey vultures in my neighbor's front yard! I was  wondering if I should check on my neighbors (ha ha) when she came outside and explained that she'd thrown some leftover ham into the yard earlier - that explained it! At one point, there were 5 of the vultures all up on her rooftop (last photo). Pretty cool!

Can you spot all 5 vultures on this rooftop?

Hope you are enjoying a great weekend - it's both Mardi Gras AND Superbowl this weekend, so celebrate!

  1. Lovely photos. My favorite is the one with the vultures drying out their wings. They're huge birds, aren't they? Thanks for sharing this unusual experience.

  2. We came home one time to find a flock of vultures on our roof and in our trees. It was ominous. We discovered later that a opposum had been hit by a car and was killed in the street.

  3. Ooh, those big birds freak me out a little...lol (the movie Birds?)

When I lived in the foothills, sometimes large crows would line up atop a row of Eucalyptus trees...and that was a little scary, too.

Thanks for sharing, and here's MY SATURDAY SNAPSHOT POST

  4. The turkey vultures are fun to watch when they fly. I used to work in the tallest building in our town, on the 6th floor. (it is only 7 stories in all) We had a pretty good view of downtown Gillette WY and there were often several turkey vultures that soared on the air currents. Beautiful. Thanks for sharing the ones in your neighborhood.

  6. Great bird watching! The turkey vultures are fun to watch. We have a flock not too far from us. We often park and just watch them.

  8. Do you know what type of hawk it is? We seem to have mainly red tail hawks around here. Yours looks much whiter than ours.

    1. We have red-tailed hawks around here, too, Anne, but this one was bigger. I've been meaning to ask one of my closest friends, who is a local bird & wildlife expert :) I'll let you know!
